Solar PV & Batteries

Generate your own electricity and store the surplus for when you need it most.

Solar PV panels generate electricity from daylight, reducing how much you need to buy from the grid. Paired with battery storage, spare generation made during the day can be stored and used in the evening, overnight, or during a power cut, rather than being exported back to the grid for a fraction of its value.

How Solar PV Works

Panels convert daylight into DC electricity, which an inverter converts into the AC electricity your home or business actually runs on. A typical domestic system uses somewhere in the region of 8 to 14 panels, depending on available roof space and how much electricity you use, with any surplus either stored in a battery or exported to the grid.

Getting Paid for What You Export

Under the Smart Export Guarantee, energy suppliers pay you for electricity you export to the grid, metered through a smart meter. It isn't a fixed government grant, rates vary between suppliers, but it means surplus generation you don't use or store still has a value rather than going to waste.

0% VAT on Installation

Solar panel and battery storage installations, including materials and labour, currently qualify for 0% VAT until 31 March 2027. This also applies to a battery added later to an existing solar system, not just batteries installed at the same time as new panels.

Working Alongside a Heat Pump

Solar PV works particularly well alongside an air source heat pump. Directing spare daytime generation into the heat pump or hot water cylinder reduces how much electricity you need to buy in, on top of whatever your solar and battery system is already saving you.
